BEST TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST JOB

Updated: Aug 21, 2019

Don't be nervous and don't go unnoticed!

If you're straight out of school or college and starting your first "real" job, it can seem scary but joining an awesome company like Team Solent, you will be welcomed with open arms and part of the team in no time!

Naturally, you will want to make an impression at your first job and set your path to success, so here are a few tips for when you start your very first job with us!

Stay humble and accept your newbie status

Off course it’s never bad to aim high, but by staying humble and managing your expectations, you avoid setting yourself up for disappointment.

When you’re fresh out of school or college and looking for your first job, it’s not uncommon to have big expectations on what you will be able to achieve in your new workplace, however there are some basic stepping stones you need to take first before aiming for the stars. Make sure you show off your work ethic, even if you are tasked with the most basic job, like folding pizza boxes or sweeping the floor, make sure you do it better than anyone else, it won’t go unnoticed.

This will show your manager you are a hard worker and that you can handle what’s given to you, big or small. Eventually it will lead to bigger responsibilities and more stimulating tasks! Just keep going!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

When in a brand new job it’s understandable that you want to impress people but no one expects you to know everything from day one!

One of the benefits at Team Solent is it's training and the great learning potential it provides. Remember that every single person you'll meet in your new position has something to teach you. Ask for help when you need it and don’t be afraid to admit when you are unsure. By seeking guidance from Managers, teammates, or even piers who have been in the business for some years and taking the time to listen, you’re definitely going to learn and grow faster.

Show up on time and always work full days

During your first weeks, it’s crucial to make a good impression and show dedication.

Being on time, getting your work done and keeping it all together is incredibly important in our stores. The employees who turn up to work 10 minutes early with their uniform spotless, they are ready for the shift ahead and will help out till the very end will never go unrecognised! The people around you will notice and appreciate it and you will become a valued team member!

Be known for being reliable, not for always being five minutes late or the one who wants to leave early!

Stay Positive

Positive thinking and a good attitude helps you cope better under stressful situations at work. We often get large party orders and can make well over 200 pizzas an hour on a Saturday night! If you display a good attitude at work, so will your teammates, because smiles, laughter and positive thinking is infectious! It will also make it easier to communicate and get along in the workplace!

If you are ready to get out there and take your first step into a "real" job that will train you, guide you and support you, don't hesitate any further!
